Tara gum is part of the same chemical family as guar gum. Both of them have a similar molecular structure known as galactomannans. Tara has similar cold water solubility to guar gum.

Tara gum shows a very similar behaviour to guar gum. It is the perfect choice to replace guar gum when a strong thickening action and an high viscosity is required.

Leather Business Unit Manager Eric Poles with his technical team invited students of the British School of Leather Technology (BSLT), part of the University of Northampton, to visit the Silvateam manufacturing plant.

Based in San Michele Mondovì (in the province of Cuneo Italy), the factory is spread over an area of 50 hectares, with a covered area of about 30,000 square meters. Silvateam is located at the foot of the Alps that allows easy access to chestnut wood, the valuable raw material of the Piedmont.

Silvateam is the world leader in the production of Tara gum, Aglumix®01, a natural food ingredient obtained from the seeds of Caesalpinia spinosa. Tara gum is a white-yellow powder used in the past to replace locust bean gum. Today, Tara gum has acquired its own identity as high class thickener and stabiliser agent in a number of food applications such as dairy products, frozen desserts, fruit preparations, sauces, dressings and mayonnaise. Aglumix®01 is approved as a food additive by the Food Chemicals Codex.
