Vegetable tanned leather
Quality in nature
Vegetable tanned leather is today at the centre of a significant rediscovery by consumers interested in products combining excellent quality standards, natural raw materials and technologically advanced manufacturing processes.
Vegetable tanning has been marginalised for some time by the dominance of manufacturing practices based on inorganic or synthetic products. This type of tanning uses processes which have been passed on for centuries from generation to generation of master craftsmen. Today it is no longer limited to the production of sole leathers and leather goods, but it is also widely used for garments, furnishings and automotive upholstery. Until a few years ago, it was necessary to use chemicals that caused negative environmental impact for these applications.
During the last years improvements have been made in the equipment used and the availability of new technological solutions. Manufacturers are now able to eliminate some of the most traditional issues related to vegetable tanning.
Some time ago, the use of vegetable tannins was almost exclusively related to sole leathers production. Today it is possible to obtain high quality environmentally friendly products: leathers with good softness, sponginess, tightness and embossing retention properties that can be refined in many ways in order to adapt to different uses. It is possible to obtain high yield weight leathers, which are compact, firm and flexible. The elastic leathers have good colour which are light fast and water proof.
The result is a superior product in every aspect, combining excellent technical characteristics, vintage-looking materials, warm colours and unique aspects that last and improve over their lifetime.
Vegetable tanned leather has a limited risk to consumer's health, including allergies, and a reduced environmental impact. It is manufactured with almost no chemical substances and, at the end of its life, it can be disposed of safely.
